With flu season among us, we thought it would be a great idea to have the Chattanooga Health Department come down and talk to the children about good safety practices. Join us for an educational morning you won't want your children to miss...washing hands has never been so fun!

Parents, you are invited to bring your children down for FUN FRIDAYS, our reading hour for children of all ages. We will be partnering with organizations such as Read 20, Chattanooga Ballet, Chattanooga Police Department, and more to bring you a fun hour of reading paired with an activity. New Book Club – Discusses Multicultural Literature

The Multicultural Literature Book Club features books written by ethnic-American authors and works in translation, old and new, as decided by the participants. This book club is for all those who enjoy exploring a diversity of cultures through reading and discussion.

In November, the MLBC will discuss The Plague of Doves by Louise Erdrich in honor of American Indian Heritage Month. The Plague of Doves is Erdrich's 13th novel, a multigenerational tour de force of sin, redemption, murder and vengeance, that finds its roots in the 1911 slaughter of a farming family near Pluto, North Dakota. At the center of the book is Evelina Harp, a passionate, endearing young woman, who, like Erdrich, is the daughter of an Indian mother and a white teacher on the reservation. Through the distinct and winning voices of Evelina, her grandfather, Mooshum, and Judge Antone Bazil Coutts, the collective stories of two interwoven communities ultimately come together to reveal a final wrenching truth.

Each month's selected title is available at Rock Point Books to participating members at a discount of 10% off of the regular price.

The MLBC meets on the second Wednesday of each month. This book club is open to the public and free to join at any time. For more information about the club or to express your interest in joining, please contact Abbie Tilley at MulticulturalLit@att.net.

Classic Lit Book Club Reviews Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte

Wuthering Heights is one of the most famous love stories in the English language. It is also one of the most potent revenge narratives. Its ingenious narrative structure, vivid evocation of landscape, and the extraordinary power of its depiction of love and hatred have given it a unique place in English literature. The passionate tale of Catherine and Heathcliff is here presented in a new edition that examines the qualities that make it such a powerful and compelling novel. The Introduction by Helen Small sheds light on the novel's oddness and power, its amorality and Romantic influences, its structure and narration, and the sadistic violence embodied in the character of Heathcliff. The volume retains the authoritative Clarendon text and notes, with new notes that identify literary allusions hitherto unnoticed. In addition, the edition boasts two appendices, one of which contains poems by Emily Bronte selected for their relevance to the novel, and a second which contains Charlotte Bronte's "Biographical Notice of Ellis & Acton Bell" and "Preface to the New Edition."

Each month's selected title is available at Rock Point Books to participating members at a discount of 10% off of the regular price.

On the third Tuesday of each month, the CLBC will review and examine a literary classic. The Classic Literature Book Club is free to join and open to the public. Join anytime. For more information about this book club, please contact Joel Swanson at (423) 432-8579 or e-mail bookclub.classics@gmail.com.
