Multicultural Lit Book Club Discusses The White Tiger

The Multicultural Literature Book Club features books written by ethnic-American authors and works in translation as decided by the participants. This book club is for all those who enjoy exploring a diversity of cultures through reading and discussion.

In January, the MLBC will discuss The White Tiger by Aravind Adiga.

Born in the dark heart of India , Balram Halwai is a complicated man. Servant. Philosopher. Entrepreneur. Murderer. Over the course of seven nights, by the scattered light of a preposterous chandelier, Balram tells us the terrible and transfixing story of how he came to be a success in life -- having nothing but his own wits to help him along. Winner of the 2008 Man Booker Prize and sold in at least sixteen countries around the world, The White Tiger is Adiga's startling, provocative debut -- a story of coruscating wit, blistering suspense, and questionable morality, told by the most volatile, captivating, and utterly inimitable narrator that this millennium has yet seen.

Each month's selected title is available at Rock Point Books to participating members at a discount of 10% off of the regular price.

The MLBC meets on the second Wednesday of each month. This book club is open to the public and free to join at any time. For more information about the club or to express your interest in joining, please contact Abbie Tilley at MulticulturalLit@att.net.

Classic Literature Book Club discusses Lost Illusions

Written between 1837 and 1843, Lost Illusions reveals, perhaps better than any other of Balzac's ninety-two novels, the nature and scope of his genius. The story of Lucien Chardon, a young poet from Angoulême who tries desperately to make a name for himself in Paris, is a brilliantly realistic and boldly satirical portrait of provincial manners and aristocratic life.

Each month's selected title is available at Rock Point Books to participating members at a discount of 10% off of the regular price.

On the third Tuesday of each month, the CLBC will review and examine a literary classic. The Classic Literature Book Club is free to join and open to the public. Join anytime. For more information about this book club, please contact Joel Swanson at (423) 432-8579 or e-mail bookclub.classics@gmail.com.

Book Signing with LOCAL author Jon Standridge

About the Book: "The Delaney Kids: Bought and Paid For is the documentary of a personal journey of discovery -- the discovery of family, of a culture, and of self. This is the heart rending tale of three siblings who were separated by a black market baby ring that, operating under state sanction as the Tennessee Children's Home Society, stole and sold more than five thousand babies from impoverished families. This is the heart warming tale of how these three siblings found each other after fifty years. This true story examines nature versus nurture, asks the big questions about the meaning of life and death, and explores what it means to turn Irish. The Delaney Kids is essential reading for anyone interested in adoption, in Southern history, in the Irish experience in America, in existential discovery, and especially for anyone who has a heart."

About the Author: John Standridge, M.D., is a professor in the department of family medicine at the University of Tennessee College of Medicine Chattanooga. He is the program director for the geriatric medicine residency and is the medical director for both the Council for Alcohol and Drug Abuse Services, and the Alexian Health Care Center. Dr. Standridge is the author of more than 40 scientific publications. He and his wife, Lynna Ruth, and their beagle, Molly McGuire Delaney, reside in Chattanooga, Tennessee.
